During our time together, you will learn the basics of weaving through hands-on experience, with no prior knowledge necessary.

Day one we will all make a sampler project to practice the steps of warp preparation, dressing the loom, and weaving. With those basics learned, you are free to weave as many projects as you like! You can experiment with your own color and pattern ideas or choose from pre-written projects.

At the end of the retreat, we’ll go over how to finish the woven cloth. You'll be able to finish your textiles in class (time and weaving speed permitting) or will have the skills to do so at home.

No experience with weaving is necessary.

YOUR OWN TOWEL

$120

2027 Spring 2 hour sessions:
May 8, 9, 15, & 16

Spend two hours getting lost in the rhythm of throwing the shuttle as you weave your own towel in The Cultivated Thread’s restored timber frame barn.

The looms will be pre-set up with a color pattern, but you will get to choose from a range of colors to be woven into the set up. After Hilary demonstrates how the loom works, your time will be spent weaving!

Tuition includes instruction, materials, and postage for returning your finished towel to you.

No experience required.

3 day class

WEAVING

$660

2027 Spring Sessions:
April 23-25, April 30-May 2, May 21-23

A three day intensive for learning all the steps from start to finish of weaving. No previous experience required. Students receive a discount on future loom rentals!

In our time together, you will learn the basics of weaving through the hands experience of making either cotton kitchen towels or a wool scarf. We will start at the very beginning and you will learn to measure a warp, dress a multi-shaft loom, weave, and finish your textile.

Classes take place 9 am - 5 pm with an hour break for lunch. Often Day 3 concludes earlier than 5, as determined by where folks are at with their projects.

Downtown Wiscasset, 7 minutes by car, has food offerings or students are welcome to bring their own lunch. The studio has a mini fridge and microwave. Tea and seltzer are provided.

No experience required

A note about The Cultivated Thread shop: You will be crafting in our restored 200 year old timber frame barn, located on the second floor. Styled after the Haystack Mountain School of Craft, our space is not winterized. Please look at the weather before your class and pack a few more layers than you think you need!
